High school students

Our 2011 ROPES students: Andrea Schneider (left) and Sarah Zhou (right)

A word from them: Prior to the ROPES programme, both of us had no experience in programming software or in university-level math. Dr. Catherine Beauchemin was an excellent teacher and supervisor and she helped us to pick up these skills quickly, as our time at Ryerson was limited. In just a month, we were able to simulate and graph models of influenza infection using Netlogo and Matlab, our first experience with programming software. Though the learning experience was difficult at times, it challenged us and gave us a perspective of the life of a research assistant.

ROPES was an excellent program and we hope to use the skills we have acquired through this month in our futures. We would like to thank TMU for this excellent opportunity, Dr. Catherine Beauchemin who went out of her way to prepare our projects and to all the graduate students in KHS 235 who put up with us in the office for the month!

ROPES is no more, but you can learn about other initiatives to engage high school students in TMU's Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science here.
